The two graphics above are screenshots of the same page holding identical content. But it's immediately obvious that the original page is a mile long while the redesigned page is far more modest in length and doesn't require lots of scrolling. I was hired by this non profit group to manage and update this web site. What initially struck me, was that the site was poorly organized and cluttered. As I moved more deeply into my role I saw that it was set up in a way that would make my job of updating very time-intensive. The organization wanted to maintain its basic look and palette, so I didn't change that much. I utililized the space better by making the side borders narrower. This gave me more room for content and created more "breathing space" for the eye. I changed the navigation system (and page architecture) so content could be found more easily and intuitively. I added some space-saving devices that allowed me to pack content into a much smaller and easier-to-negotiate "footprint." |
