Mother's

Mother's Day of Peace

its original meaning
Mothers
Day was originally Mothers
Day of Peace. It was conceived as a day to encourage
women to rise up
and work for peace. In 1872, Julia Ward
Howe, author of the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of
the Republic, was horrified by the ravages of the Civil
War that claimed the lives of countless mothers sons.
She suggested that a day be set aside each year when mothers
could grieve their losses from war and join together to build
a world that is nurturing, safe, and compassionate for their
children and future generations.
We
are a group of women living
in Sherborn, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, and we wish
to return Mothers Day to its original meaning. Thousands
of women and children in areas of the world devastated by war
are mourning the deaths of the husbands, fathers, sons and daughters
they loved and depended on, and are themselves dying from injuries,
starvation, disease, and the aftermath of warfare. As women
and mothers, we are deeply saddened. Perhaps you are too.
Show
your mom what a great kid she raised.
Give a Mother's Day gift that really counts
We
ask that you honor the special women in your life, by
donating some or all of the money that you might otherwise
spend on a Mothers Day gift to a humanitarian organization
committed to relieving the suffering brought on by war. We have
identified and listed the names of several
well-respected humanitarian organizations that are
working toward these ends. Please download our EveryMother's
Day Pledge Card so you can let the women in your life
know that you honored them with a gift that really counts.
EveryMother's
Day is more than a one-day-a-year celebration
EveryMother's
Day is more than a one-day-a-year celebration.
It is an
orientation that views every day as an opportunity to reach
out and help those who are suffering in the midst or aftermath
of warevery mother, every child, every day, everywhere.
