Suggestions for Donations > Doctors without Borders Doctors without Borders Doctors without Borders/Medecins sans Frontieres was founded in 1971 by a small group of French doctors who believed that all people have the right to medical care and that the needs of these people supersede respect for national borders. Each year more than 2500 volunteer doctors, other medical professionals and support personnel join 1500 locally-hired staff to provide medical aid in more than 80 countries including "hot spots" as well as those" outside the glare of media spotlight, e.g. Chechnya, Colombia, and throughout Africa. When conflicts erupt, Doctors without Borders immediately sends teams of surgeons, anesthetists, operating room nurses and support personnel into the field. They carry equipment necessary to establish operating rooms and clinics, provide basic public hygiene assistance, begin training local medical and support staff In cases of prolonged conflict, the team may provide primary care. nutrition services, and epidemic control to the local population and those displaced by the fighting.
