In
creating this floorcloth, I had the following information
about my client:
- She
lives in Arizona where the sun is bright and colors
are too.
- She
is originally from Tuscany in Italy.
- The
house's style is contemporary and southwestern.
- The
floorcloth was to be placed on a covered patio just
outside and in full view of the kitchen.
- The
dominating decorative element in the kitchen was the
wallpaper shown below.

-
I
chose the color palette as well as the "block"
motif for the floorcloth directly from the wallpaper
sample. The sun designs in the 4 corners were inspired
by the southwest and Tuscany connections. The ribbon-like
motif along the border of the rug was inspired by
the "free" lines in the wallpaper design.
The center of the rug was first sponged and mottled
and then spattered with paint flecks to echo the wallpaper
again, and to hide dirt. Finally, the floorcloth was
coated with 6 coats of exterior water-base polyurethane.
My
client told me that I "hit the mark" in
creating a design that fits perfectly with her style
and space.
