This
floorcloth was designed to be used in front of the kitchen sink
in an elegant home. The room itself has white cabinetry, black
granite counters, hardwood floors, and accent ceramics in cobalt
blue and white. The adjoining breakfast room has sunflower gold
walls and the spirit of Provence. The homeowner is someone who
is clearly not afraid of color. I created it for a couple with
Asian roots who describe themselves as loving French Impressionism,
flowers and butterflies. I drew the palette from the walls and
pottery, and the irises from Van Gogh (with apologies). The
cobalt blue borders were created of many coats of deep blue
glaze with an embedded leaf design that suggests a Chinese silk
brocade scroll.
