How
a Custom Floorcloth is Made
A
canvas floorcloth is a very durable, distinctive, versatile,
and easy-to-maintain floorcovering. It is durable because it
is constructed to endure. This is how a floorcloth comes to
be.
- 1-
A floorcloth begins life with a design
process geared to create a rug that meets your exact
needs and aesthetic tastes. I provide a sketch for your
approval.
2- A floorcloth physically begins as raw, heavy artist
canvas.
3- It is rough cut, stapled to the floor, stretched,
and primed with a coat of Gesso (primer) before it is flipped
over, stapled down again and primed again on the back.
4- It is cut to precise size, hemmed, and given a
base coat of paint.
5- It is now time to execute the design, using water-based
paints and glazes. Frequently many coats of paint are laid
down in the painting process, each needing to dry before
the next. Hand-painting, faux finishing, stencilling, and
stamping--all using original patterns-- may be used.
6- Finally, the paint must thoroughly cure before
receiving the protective coating.
7- Each floorcloth is treated with 6 coats of the
highest quality, floor-grade, water-based varnish to create
a surface that is 3 times more durable than that of a hard
wood floor. It receives 1 coat on the back.
All
told, a floorcloth receives many coats of surface treatment
and protection before it reaches your floor. The finished
product is very substantial and has heft and presence.
