Floorcloths: a new/old ARTform
What
is a Floorcloth?
A
floorcloth is an area rug made from canvas that is primed and
then painted in an unlimited variety of designs and colors.
The evolution of a floorcloth is
a many-stepped process. A floorcloth is especially suitable
for use in locations where beauty, durability, and ease of maintainance
are considerations. A floorcloth offers decorative and creative
possibilities unequaled in other media— and limited only
by the imagination. It can echo a favorite fabric, motif, or
color combination and can pull together your decor. A floorcloth
can lie quietly and subtly protecting your floors, or can become
the focal point for the room.
I don't carry a stock of ready-made floorcloths. Instead,
I custom design each floorcloth on commission to suit your
personal style and preferences. When commissioned to paint
a floorcloth, I come to your home (if you're local), or learn
about you, your space, favorite colors and styles through
photographs, swatches,
and conversations, I then begin an interactive design
process with you leading to your approval of the design. Finally,
the painting begins. Designs can be simple or intricate, traditional
or contemporary, decorative or imaginative--a work of art
for your floor.
A
floorcloth becomes an integral part of your living environment,
and as such, is designed to pull together many disparate elements
of your living space-- personal style, favorite colors, motifs,
collections, special belongings. As an art piece created to
unify and harmonize other elements, a floorcloth should be visually
strong and dynamic enough to hold its place in the environment
without overwhelming it. My work transcends the limiting categories
of contemporary
or traditional style and would be appropriate in a wide
variety of settings
But
can I REALLY walk on it?
Yes,
yes, and a firmly resounding YES!
A properly constructed floorclothis extremely durable
even in high-traffic areas, and is as easy to keep clean as
vinyl flooring. It is reminiscent of linoleum in its durabilty
and ease of maintenance. Each floorcloth
is made to last from heavy #10 artist’s canvas, each
floorcloth is stretched, primed and painted on both sides, hemmed,
and finally coated with 6 coats of high-quality, low-gloss water-based
varnish— more than three times the average hard-wood
floor.
