Each
creation is unique, and collaborativea singular blend
of your tastes, the demands of your environment, and my
artistry. I give form to your dreams.
Usable
ArtJust for You
My
background and training are as a sculptor and a psychologist.
I've chosen painted canvas floorcloths as my medium because
I love working directly on the floor, playing with color,
and creating large pieces of art that are intended to be
used; art that is functional, not rarified and precious.
A floorcloth is designed to be walked on, and I take great
care in my craftsmanship to create art pieces that will
provide many years of pleasure and utility.
Working
collaboratively is my specialty. It is my pleasure and my
gift to be able to give form to your needs and fantasies.
Repeatedly clients tell me that I "see" the designs
and color combinations that are in their minds. That I capture
the spirit of what they want and give form to it. Some artists
feel hampered by having to "compromise" their
own visions in meeting a client's needs. This very collaboration
is what I love about doing custom work.
My
Role is to Give Form to Your Style
I
don't limit myself to a single style, yet there is a unity
in my body of work that tells the eye that it comes
from one artist. I am drawn to mid-tone colors from nature
that are warm, rich, and muted. I rarely use paints as they
come from the tube or can, but mix them until they form
new in-between colors that are juxtaposed in ways that are
novel yet pleasing. I prefer "broken" over flat
color, and make

considerable use of glazes and the techniques
of faux
painting-- sponging, washing, ragging, spattering, and gilding--
to create the illusion of depth, and to add richness and
texture to my surfaces. I apply all pigments by hand using
brushes and original stamps and stencils. I use exclusively
water-based products: Golden
acrylics and glazes, Benjamin
Moore Latex Paints, and high-quality varnishes.
Most
of my floorcloths transcend the limiting categories of contemporary
or traditional and would be appropriate in a wide variety
of settings. Many are compositions of pure, elegant, sophisticated
design inspired by my appreciation of textiles from many
different cultures. Common to all is my sense of color,
and the recurrent use of naturalistic elements reflecting
my deep and abiding love of nature.

I teach, "But Can I Really Walk on It?: The Art of
Floorcloths" at the Boston
Learning Society. I have been teaching the class for
several years to many students who have delighted in being
able to create their own floorcloths. I also teach a class
in faux finishing techniques.
